5/4/15 - Pompeys Pillar. Billings, MT

We left our campground in Billings & began our journey to North Dakota.

Along Rt. 94 we found Pompeys Pillar which is a National Monument so we stopped to check it out.

William Clark's signature at Pompeys Pillar is the only physical evidence "on site" of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

William Clark actually carved his name & date in this pillar.

They have the signature encased in this glass protective case so that will not be damaged or defaced over time.

This is what Clark's signature actually looks like on the Pillar.

Clark's signature on the pillar behind me.

Now after seeing how high this pillar is we had to climb up 105 steps to see Ckark's signature & 215 steps altogether to reach the top of the pillar to look out over the Yellowstone River.

Platform behind Carp is the top of the pillar.

Yes, I made it to the top as well.

This was a mountain that we saw on the rest of our ride towards North Dakota.
