4/14/15 - Avenue of the Giants Redwoods, CA

Today we headed north to the Avenue of the Giants which are the great redwood trees in Northern California.

We were overwhelmed by the magnificent trees. They were massively tall & very large around.

This tree was struck by lighting that created this cavity in the tree. Because these trees are so tall a lot if them get struck by lighting.

You can see just how huge these trees actually are!

We felt very tiny next to these mammoth trees. Needless to say, I could not get my arms around this one.

The trees are so tall that there is not much sunlight coming through the trees. It was very shady.

The majority of the trees are the size of this felled tree & larger.

As we wized by I grabbed this picture of this tree.

We stopped at a visitor's center in the Redwoods & this tree was on display. It was a 900+ year old tree.

We learned that if a tree has these lumps called "burls" it means that the tree has been under stress. See it is not just humans who get stressed.

It was time to head to the campground for the night. We stayed at the Ancient Redwoods Campground and we found this tree at the campground.

This was also at the campground.

Carp relaxing on a chair made from a tree.

Really neat!

This is the immortal tree. I felt dwarfed next to it.

In our travels to our next campground we saw this awesome male elk grazing on the front lawn of a house.
I whistled at him & he looked up so that I could capture his picture. What a wonderful treat that was.

Then when we reached our campground we were greeted by seven chickens.

I guess you would call these free range chickens because they were allowed to roam around the campground at will!

Enjoy!

More adventures to come!
